Our Solidarity is Louder Than Hate!
from Tara Miller, Co-Executive Director
As the first openly queer and myself the first openly trans Executive Directors of the Church Council, Joey and I deeply felt the risks our communities faced when white Christian nationalists came to town last weekend, and we knew this impact would be compounded for Black and brown trans and queer communities. As stewards of a historically and predominantly white Christian organization, we take serious the Church Council's responsibility to confront the violence being perpetuated by these groups and often by our government.
That's why on August 30th, we were proud to support Lavender Rights Project's Louder Than Hate event which centered and celebrated trans joy! Over 50 people of faith and conscience joined us to create a line of solidarity in front of Washington Hall, following the leadership of LRP, and utilizing the skills we've learned through weeks of Nonviolent Direct Action Trainings. Thanks again to leaders from Valley and Mountain Fellowship, Jewish Voice for Peace, and Troublemakers for training us. The day was far calmer than expected across the city due to the tireless work of community groups and Seattleites who support their trans and queer neighbors, so much of our evening was spent building and deepening relationships.
There will be more opportunities to come, so stay tuned for ways you can join us in supporting other initiatives led by trans and queer organizations, continuing to develop nonviolent direct action skills, and utilizing them in support of directly impacted communities. Thanks again to all who supported with planning, all who held the line of solidarity, and to Lavender Rights Project for hosting an amazing event to show that Love is Louder Than Hate!
